By Philip J Flores, 2004, published in USA by Jason Aronson.

In this work, Dr Flores shows how to give substance abusers an attachment experience and a sense of community where they feel they are accepted and belong. The theme of attachment, trust and safety is prominent throughout. Therapy, directed along the lines described, allows the chemically dependent person to get close and be intimate with others who are accepting of him without a cost to his identity and autonomy. Ultimately, it allows the alcoholic and addict to deal with the emotions and conflicts triggered by all intimate encounters without relying on alcohol and drugs to sedate, buffer or alter his or her feelings.

Tracy Jarvis writes “Thought I’d blog this. Sometimes I feel so lucky to be studying this artform. Especially when I see and look around every day.”

I often wonder about the world
I wonder about the people
I see the homeless every day
I think about them

I remember a man
Convulsing, skin so blue
Almost a coma
An addict
I presumed drugs and alcohol
Maybe a mixture
I didn’t care
The stench

A Life.

I looked through him
Our unconscious met
I saw him, just a boy
Only a boy
Nothing else
The ambulance came

I drove down the road
The sky so blue
The smell of summer and sweetness
The sound of trees
Delightful

Then I saw him
That boy
That boy with a beard
His skin so soft, unshaven
His bristles alive and well

I looked at him
I smiled
My eyes smiled tears of joy
And my heart sank
I cried

I still wonder about him.

Last week I rode past a needle
I stared, I still do
How many lives has it taken?
How many boys?
How many girls?

Aren’t we just the same?
Separated by our ability of choice

I realised I’m stuck in one big T.O.T (T.O.T.E without the exit) and I don’t know how to exit? Its like I’m trying to get something, and I realised I’ve had enough. I’m considering an exit and it feels rather scary. Maybe some more fish, a bigger fish tank or the ocean….the possibilities seem endless…”

Goldfish!

The bowl is round
The sand is yellow
There is a piece of seaweed

You are well looked after
Your water is changed
And you are well fed

You swim

The bowl is round
The sand is yellow
There is a piece of seaweed

You play

The bowl is round
The sand is yellow
There is a piece of seaweed

You dance

The bowl is round
The sand is yellow
There is a piece of seaweed

You look at yourself.

“Did it ever ocur to you that
The bowl is round
The sand is yellow
There is a piece of seaweed”

Just a note to let you know that, following Alan Hills’ suggestion at our General Meeting, I’ve now added an RSS feed to the CCP website (www.wider-mind.com). This can automatically alert you (via your RSS reader, see below) to updates posted on the site.

To subscribe to this feed, just scroll down and click on the RSS icon (orange square) next to Recent Updates (RSS). And if all this sounds like gobbledy-gook to you, have a look at Google’s RSS reader at www.google.com/reader

As mentioned at the meeting yesterday, we’ll still aim to mention any significant news and updates on the ccpmembers e-group.

And on a different topic, do have a look at the updated Services page, and send in your details to Mandy (using the form on the Community page) if you haven’t already done so.

We’ve just introduced some changes to the CCP website which we hope will make it more useful and interesting. The main changes you can see on the home page:

A new Events topic - click on this and you can see a list of forthcoming events, some just for CCP members and others open to the public.

An Event Calendar, highlighting days when events are scheduled - hold your mouse over a highlighted day and you’ll see what’s on, and you can click to get the full details.

A new Regulation topic - in due course this will contain regular information updates from Pam on the progress of psychotherapy regulation.

We’ve also re-arranged the Community page and some other sections of the site to make them clearer and more relevant - have a look and let us know what you think!

At the moment only Pam and Mandy and myself can put information up on the website, but later we hope to introduce arrangements for you to post your own events and news. So watch this space!

In a highly experiential training, you will learn a tried and tested Contemporary model that unifies the main psychotherapeutic approaches, as diverse as Counselling, CBT, 12 Step and Motivational Interviewing, into the core conceptual and intervention commonalities that support recovery from substance addiction (drugs and alcohol) and process dependency, (such as sex and gambling). The training explores these applications in both group and individual therapy settings and the therapist’s role in the dependency matrix.
